Remember back in the beginning I said this was both an easy and a hard review to write? Back in January I reviewed Born to Run by Chris McDougall and I was hooked. His training methods are revolutionary, he calls for radical dietary changes and he developed his own unique sports psychology. I tell people it is best to do the course slowly. For the running reader, it is a chance to make amazing new strides. After reading the entire book I know that I can do it. Orton talks about visualizing striding over logs while running to get proper knee lift. Starting from the feet up, Eric guides the reader through his technique for building the perfect running body.
I really didn't feel like that alternative narrative style added anything. Personally I've always stayed away from self-help titles, from all these inspired people flying the world for pai Ultimately I could describe this book as being a mash up of very useful and strong content along with ridiculously useless cheesy parts. This book has a lot of fluff. Its about the joy of running that we were all born with and can reawaken. So now I'm at exactly the point where I need to figure out how to put myself back together and train for a 2014 marathon. After injuries and a couple years of not running steadily , my goal is simply to work up to a 5k and I still found the book more than helpful.
Striking on your heel leads to excessive force coming up through your heel and into your legs, knees, hips and back. I see a lot of people who come in for information about the course. Fortunately, I've been mostly free from major injuries, but I've had several little issues. In many ways it felt like Orton was describing my Cool Impossible, but we'll get to that later.
The format of the book is quite different. What Orton preaches is being able to run without pain. But I guess what matters is the running advice, and there Orton has what sounds to me like a reasonable hypothesis. Well those things are in there.
Orton makes a few good points on nutrition cutting sugar out of his diet improved his performance , the design of humans we are made to move!! The goal was already there. Starting from the feet up, Eric guides the reader through his technique for building the perfect running body. That's not controversial, however many authors fail to really describe a cohesive program for developing leg and foot strength, good form, and balance. So here is what you can expect from me. Eric has been the trainer for many world class runners and triathletes. I really didn't feel like that alternative narrative style added anything. Don't be afraid to pick this up if you are not a long distance runner.
Natural running is more than barefoot running. Same with I've run quite a bit over the years. If I hadn't enjoyed the content I would have given up on the prose long before the end. We never ran the intensive course again. So we read we are looking at the stars or eating in a diner with him. The truth is: Athleticism is awareness.
Did it seem do able? In some ways this was an easy book to review, in others it was very, very difficult. I saw a chiropractor four years ago to correct a hip imbalance that was causing all sorts of problems. That's where I am right now on anything longer then a half-marathon. Highly recommend for runners looking to up their game at a long Eric Orton was Christopher McDougall's author of Born to Run running coach and inspiration behind the now famous book. And then it was just a matter of practice and persistence. Same with racquetball and most other sports.
They can scale mountains, in brutally hot or cold weather, pushing their bodies, minds, and spirits well past what seems humanly possible. Give your body the time it needs to change. I was nervous and uptight, ended up going out to fast and barely made it across the finish line. It is packed with great advice about running- managing your body and your mind to do whatever you want to do. The truth is: Athleticism is awareness. Despite this it is extremely irritating in style.
